Professor Sang Yup Kim joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering in March 2021. He received his B.S. and M.S. from Seoul National University and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, followed by postdoctoral research at Yale University. He was promoted to associate professor in 2025.

His Composite Intelligence Laboratory develops next-generation intelligent composite materials, with results including cornstarch-based intelligent particles (Nature Communications), soft-actuating robotic particles (Advanced Materials), and soft robots that vanish after completing their mission (Science Advances).
